This was the big new tournament put on by Bay to Bay Volleyball Club and West Coast Volleyball Association, among others. The local clubs represented in this one included Aspire, Core, NCVC, Omni, SynergyForce, and newcomer Sanctuary. A few teams came from the clubs in the Fresno/Clovis/Sanger area (Apache, Triumph, Tsunami, and San Joaquin Elite), but I'm not going to report their results. I'll focus on the Sac-J area clubs. A couple of local players did compete for clubs outside of the area. They were Kale Cochran for the Mountain View Volleyball Club (MVVC) 17 Red and Nolan Marks with Bay to Bay 15-1. I'll touch on the results for those teams below. Here are the results for each of the three age divisions that included local teams (there was a U12 division, but no local teams were in it). I show the teams by order of finish, along with their win-loss record for the weekend. I show the total number of teams in each age group in parentheses below next to the name of the age division:
14 Open (38 teams)
11 (tie). SynergyForce 14-1 Gold, 2-3 record
19 (tie). Omni 14-1 National, 2-3 record
19 (tie). Sanctuary 14-1, 2-3 record
25. NCVC 14-1 Blue, 3-2 record
29. Aspire 14-1 Ninjas, 2-3 record
35. Omni 14-2 Elite, 2-3
These finishes go to show what a fine line it is to finish in the top half of the division vs. the lower half. All six teams had virtually the same record, but finished from 11th all the way to 35th, with the only team finishing with a winning record (NCVC) in the bottom half. A note about the Sanctuary team, based on their roster, they appear to be from the Ripon area with Van Groningen among the coach and player names. This team will be at the NCVA Summer Kick-off starting tomorrow and I hope I get a chance to check them out. The champion of this age division was MVVC 14 Red.
16 Open (53 teams)
2. NCVC 16-1 Blue, 7-1 record
13 (tie). Aspire 15-1 Raiders, 4-1 record
13 (tie). Omni 16-1 National, 3-2 record
13 (tie). SynergyForce 15-1 Gold, 2-3 record
36. Aspire 16-2 Spartans, 2-3 record
43. Omni 15-1 National, 2-3 record
44. Omni 16-2 Elite, 1-4 record
45. Aspire 16-1 Warriors, 1-4 record
47. SynergyForce 16-1 Gold, 2-3 record
49. NCVC 15-1 Blue, 1-4 record
50. Omni 15-2 Elite, 0-5 record
A great showing by the NCVC 16-1's getting to the championship match before falling to the MVVC 16 Red team. Nolan Marks' Bay to Bay 15-1 team finished tied for 3rd, missing by one a chance to be in the championship match. The three teams that finished tied for 13th (one each from Aspire, Omni, and SynergyForce) all lost in their opening matches of the Gold bracket on Sunday morning. They were all in a position to do really well in the tournament, particularly the Omni 16-1 team that lost their match in 3 sets.
18 Open (27 teams)
11 (tie). Core 17 Sac Elite, 2-3 record
11 (tie). Omni 18-2 Elite, 2-3 record
16. Aspire 17-1 Titans, 2-3 record
17. SynergyForce 17-1 Gold, 1-3 record
19. SynergyForce 18-1 Gold, 2-3 record
Bay to Bay 18-1 won this age group. Kale Cochran's MVVC 17 Red team finished tied for 3rd, coming up just one match short of the championship match. The two local teams finishing tied for 11th also lost their opening matches in the Gold bracket, with Omni 18-2 Elite going down in 3 sets.
